A call for help
Donated monies are used to purchase Stop & Shop, Dunkin Donuts, Subway and McDonalds gift cards to share with folks who are on the street and hungry, particularly during this pandemic. One hundred twenty sandwiches are made each Thursday during this time and given to those in need of food.
On his way back into the woods off of Route 8 with a turkey sandwich in hand, Jorge happily said, "I'm going to save this for late tonight and imagine that I'm on my way to my kitchen for a midnight snack!"
Previously homeless folks who get an apartment or rooming house have the problem of filling their new living space with beds, furniture, pots and pans… all basic necessities. They own nothing. On average of once a week, with the help of two senior volunteers and their pick-up truck, items are collected and delivered to empty, humble apartments. A team of four men are hired to do the muscle work of moving the furniture and boxes. Folks feel comfortable, thankful and cared about.
Each spring and fall Sister Eileen offers day and overnight retreats at beautiful Mercy by the Sea in Madison, CT for the homeless: two retreats for women and two for men.
Joel said of a recent retreat "This retreat really opened me up to things. It showed me the fight's never over but I can stay strong. If I never go on another retreat, I will remember this one."
Each Summer Sr. Eileen hosts Project Connect, a community event to gather and provide much-needed supplies to the homeless in Bridgeport. This annual event offers basic living necessities such as clothing and hygiene products, as well as information from various agencies on medical resources and other forms of available support.
The generosity of giving people continues the work of our loving and compassionate God in our world today!
